In the digital age of persistent connectivity and increasing transparency, the old forms of Marketing are failing. They were designed to work with people who were generally less informed and more isolated than the audiences of today. Simply moving your techniques to Twitter or Facebook is not sustainable in the long run. People are more skeptical, avoid sales messages, and are less likely to commit without doing some additional research on the web. The future consumer will expect tailored messages designed to anticipate real needs and desires, and will not respond in the same way to standard techniques.
The future of marketing is not made of one way communications. Instead, we can look at all of our relationships (to humans AND machines), and the mediums through which we can interact with different audiences as a single Platform of Influence. Then we can craft messages and measure results, helping us expand on our ability to affect change and inspire choices that bring us value in the long run.
